“Just to the south of where I live is a wonderfully wild bit of coast line called “The Savage Coast.” This time of year the beaches are covered with a rich layer of kelp thrown up by the storms. Some times I go down there, wrapped up well against the wind, with a bottle of wine and a few oysters for lunch. Do some painting and drawing, then make my way home. All in a days work!”

“The first mushrooms that I have found this year. These are parasol mushrooms, or lepiota. They were clean and fresh, growing beneath some old hazel trees on the edge of the field. Standing up over the dew soaked grass like sentinels of autumn, their soft earthy smell quietly heralding the change in the seasons. I have enough for supper for they make splendid eating. I suppose I should add that they cause upset tummies in some people and you should check very carefully before eating fungi. I have foraged for fungus for many a year, tried a lot of them and have a few favourites. You have to make your own mind up on the fungi as free food fing!”

“I am often awake and working in the middle of the night. Last night, with the light of a faint waxing crescent moon, the night mist made soft and ethereal shapes across the garden towards the field. Surprisingly this painting took just as long as the others have although at first glance it is just a bunch of blues and greys! I think it worked, for me it did anyway. This is what it looked and felt like. As a painting it is not perhaps the most colourful or uplifting but then this painting a day game is all about practise and keeping fit as an artist, so maybe after a while it is important to try out some new moves. This is one, painting the night!”

“This is a papier-mâché bowl that I made sixteen years ago. The night that I was putting on the blues I found that water splashed onto the dry paint then sponged off made great patterns. So I sneaked into the kid’s rooms and while they were sleeping, I put their little baby hands onto the bowl and dabbed away with the sponge and the paint. They woke up the next day with strange blue-hand-itus but that washed off. I, on the other hand, have a bowl that, sixteen years later I can use to evoke the blues just by looking at those tiny handprints. It does no harm, every once in a while to enjoy a little reflection.”

“ This is the 100th painting a day. Which I think calls for a celebration. So here is a self-portrait. Portraits in watercolour are difficult and this took a little longer than the maximum two hours that I normally allow. But doing it for 100 days is an achievement and its not every day that I get the opportunity to paint a woman with a shaved head, even if it is me! Setting myself the task of doing one painting a day has been a challenge, sometimes having to get up early in the morning to be able to do it as well as illustration and commissions… but it is a practice that I would recommend to anyone. It has made me realise that I need to paint my own stuff as well as what I am asked to do by other people and so the spin off has been a huge increase in work on my part, more paintings than I show here. Soon I shall be looking for a gallery, or two, to take my work, so if anyone out there is interested get in touch.”

“If you scroll back through the blog archives to July 20th you will find this same view, another early morning. This was a coincidence; it must be something to do with the 20th of the month. Two months on the light is very different, the barley has been cut and the seasons have moved on.
I like the continuity of this idea, and might repeat it later through the year.”

“In this painting I have been trying to paint the spaces, looking at the shapes they make rather than the objects themselves. As well as the play of light and dark it is important to try and infuse the feeling of the place. It is the afternoon, work has gone on in the late summer flower borders and now it is time for tea. A chance to sit a while in an old chair, to enjoy the colours and smells of the garden and watch as summer turns into autumn.”
